The Sign Gifts..
Let's start with tongues.
The most divisive of the gifts it seems.
First off, no; Scripture doesn't prove that it ended with the last
of the Apostles like many try to say.
Now to sort of clarify, there are several different variations of
this gift:
Speaking in a language you don't know...
Hearing someone speak in your language when they are speaking another...
Praying privately in a language you don't know...
Clear as mud now? Onward we go.
Whole doctrines have been created to address this..
from both sides.
Hold on tight..
On the one side you run the gamut of:
If you don't speak in tongues you aren't saved...
If you don't speak in tongues you aren't baptized with the Holy Spirit...
If you don't pray in tongues you aren't doing it right...
Now on the other side:
It's all fake...
It stopped with the last apostle...
It ended during the early church... (pick a date)
Now for a reality check courtesy of ye ole exwitch.
For the anti-tongues crowd... I get it, really I do, but all
of the sign gifts still exist today. Even tongues.
For the pro-tongues crowd... not everyone gets that gift, and it has
nothing to do with either salvation or the Baptism of Fire.
This whole thing got blown out of proportion because there are
opposing agendas at work... but tongues in particular came to the
front since it's easier to fake than the other gifts.
After all, it's hard to fake praying someone off their deathbed...
And it's hard to fake a resurrection...
Or praying in the end of a drought...
By comparison, it's easy to fake speaking in an unknown tongue.
More later...
